DRESS AND GROOMING
(The
Board of Trustees gives authority to campus principals to
strengthen the district’s basic Student Dress Code as
necessary.)
The
district’s dress code is established to teach grooming and
hygiene, prevent disruption, and minimize safety hazards.
Students and parents may determine a student’s personal
dress and grooming standards, provided that they comply
with the following:
1. Sideburns
may not extend past the earlobes.
2. Mustaches
are permitted provided they are neatly trimmed. Goatees,
beards, or facial hair are prohibited (must be clean
shaven).
3. All
students’ hair shall be clean and well groomed at all
times and shall not obstruct vision. No extreme style or
color shall be allowed. No symbols, letters, or designs
cut in the hair that are suggestive or excessive shall be
permitted. No pony tails, pig tails, duck tails, rat
tails, or puff balls shall be allowed on male students.
Male students’ hair length must not be touching the
collar. General grooming of the student body will be
determined by the principal.
4.
Advertisements or symbols that promote or depict drugs,
alcohol, tobacco products, violence, on all apparel,
jewelry, and accessories. No chains, handcuffs, or any
other accessory that suggests weaponry shall be used.
5. Hats,
caps, headbands, bandanas, sunglasses, or other head
coverings/accessories shall not be worn in the buildings.
Terrell High School and Furlough Middle School have the
following provision: No stickers shall be worn on the
face.
6. Hair
rollers and styling clips are not allowed.
7. Unnatural
hair coloring such as green, purple, etc. is prohibited.
8. Sagging
Pants: (Applies to all campuses): Students shall wear
their trousers properly at the natural waist line.
(Two-to-three fingers below belly button).
No sagging of
pants will be allowed.
Jewelry and Other Accessories
1. Excessive makeup and/or jewelry are not
allowed.
2. All tattoos must be covered and hidden from view.
3. Jewelry used in conjunction with body piercing such as
nose rings, lip rings, eyebrow rings, or tongue studs are
prohibited.
4. Boys may not wear earrings, spacers, makeup, or nail
polish.
5. Students are not to wear sunshades or sunglasses in
school unless they provide a note from their physician
stating the need to do so.
6. Chains on wallets are not permitted.
Shirts, Blouses, Turtlenecks
Style: Collared knit button polo style shirt or
dress style buttoned shirts/blouses (long or short
sleeve), turtlenecks
Color: Red, White, or Navy Blue (solid, single
colors)
All shirts, blouses, and turtlenecks must be tucked in at
all times and must stay tucked in when arms are raised.
Shirts must be tucked in so that belts show.
Approved Terrell school logos only (2" x 2" inches, unless
approved by administration).
School logos are not required.
All shirts and blouses must be fastened no lower than 4
inches from the top of the collar.
Stripes, checks, or other designs on shirts, blouses, or
turtlenecks are not allowed.
T-shirts, denim, thermal type, zippered, unhemmed or
sleeveless tops are not allowed.
At Terrell High School, students enrolled
in Health Science Technology program may wear
campus-approved scrubs on days designated by the HST
instructor.
Sweatshirts, Hooded Sweatshirts, Sweaters,
Vests, and Pullovers
Color: Red, white or navy blue (solid, single
colors)
Sweatshirts, hooded sweatshirts, sweaters, vests, and
pullovers must be appropriately sized in the shoulders,
sleeves, and length, and must be worn over collared polo
shirt, blouse, or turtleneck.
Approved Terrell school logos only (2" x 2", unless
approved by administration). – School logos are not
required.
Stripes, checks, lettering, or other designs are not
allowed on sweatshirts, vests, or sweaters.
Sleeveless or capped sleeve sweatshirts are not allowed.
Hoods do not count as collars.
Sweatshirts, hooded sweatshirts, sweaters, vest, and
pullovers cannot be worn unless they are red, white, or
navy blue.
Slacks, Shorts, and Pants
Style:
Pleated or
flat front docker-style slacks or pants (belted and
full-length); walking style shorts. Pants with belt loops
must have a belt.
Color:
Khaki or Navy Blue (solid, single colors)
Hem of shorts
must fall between the bottom of the knee and no more than
3 inches above the knee (in both front and back).
Pockets must
be waist level and flat. Low pockets (cargo style) and
"puff" pockets are not allowed.
Capri and Cargo style pants are not allowed.
Carpenter,
overall, painter, flood pants, hip-hugger, or low-rise
style pants are not allowed.
Baggy style
legged slacks or bell-bottom pants wider than shoes are
not allowed.
Jeans, denim,
corduroy, or khaki jeans are not allowed.
Slacks,
shorts, and pants must be worn at the waist and be
properly hemmed or cuffed.
Logos or
labels on pants must be no larger than 1" x 1".
Soccer or
boxer style shorts are not allowed, except as directed by
instructors during PE/Athletics, Cheer, Band, or Drill
team classes.
Brads, studs
or other adornments are not allowed on pants, shirts, or
belts.
Shirt (top)
and pants, skirt, skorts (bottom) may not be same color.
Example: May not wear a navy blue shirt with navy blue
pants
At Terrell High School, students enrolled
in Health Science Technology program may wear

Skirts and Skorts
Color: Khaki or Navy Blue (solid, single colors)
Skirts may be longer than the knee and no shorter than 3
inches above the top of the kneecap. Slits are allowed,
but not above the top of the kneecap.
Knee length skirts may have a kick-pleat (no more than 3
inches above the top of the kneecap), but not a slit.
Skorts length may be no longer than the top of the kneecap
or shorter than 3 inches above the top of the kneecap. No
slit is allowed.
Pockets must be waist level and flat. Low pockets (cargo
style) and "puff" pockets are not allowed.
Logos or labels on skirts or skorts must be no larger than
1" x 1".
Jumpers
Style: V-neck, square neck, or round neck
Color: Khaki or Navy Blue (solid, single colors)
Jumpers must be worn no more than 3 inches above the top
of the kneecap (in both front and back). No slits are
allowed.
Collared polo shirt, blouse, or turtleneck must be worn
under the jumper at all times.
Shorts must be worn under skirts or jumpers for Pre-K
through 6th grade.
Kick-pleats are allowed (no more than 3 inches above the
top of the knee-cap). Slits are not allowed.
Other than jumpers, dresses are not allowed.
Logos are not allowed.
Socks, Hose/Tights
Style (socks): Socks must be worn with slacks,
pants or shorts
Color (socks): White, navy blue, red, black or
khaki (solid, single colors)
Color (hose/tights): White, navy blue, black,
khaki, or flesh-tone (solid, single colors)
Socks must match socks.
Stripes, checks, or other designs on socks or hose/tights
are not allowed.
Shoes, Boots, Tennis Shoes
Style (shoes and boots): Must be closed toe and
closed heel. Para-military type boots, sandals, thongs,
flip flops, house-shoes, open-toed or open-heeled shoes
are not allowed.
Steel toed boots or shoes are not allowed.
Color:
Brown, black or navy blue leather-like shoes (tie or
loafer-type), or brown, black or navy blue boots (pants
are to be worn on the outside of the boots), or tennis
shoes (no bright colors)
Shoes must
match shoes. Boots must match boots. Tennis shoes must
match tennis shoes.
Shoes that
are designed to have shoestrings must have shoestrings,
and the shoestrings must be appropriately tied.
Shoestrings
must match, must be solid color, and cannot be neon or
distracting colors.
Shoes with
Velcro, buckles, or other types of fasteners must be
fastened appropriately for the design of the shoe (closed,
buckled, etc.).
Belts
Style: Leather-like dress style belts must be worn
at all times. –
Wearing
belts is encouraged, but not required for Pre-K and K.
Color:
Solid colored brown, black or navy blue dress style
Stripes,
checks, or other designs on belts are not allowed.
Belts must be
appropriate size.
Belts must be plain leather-like. Metal studs,
brads, or other adornments are not allowed.
Belts may not
be wider than belt loops and must be worn inside loops at
the waist.
Outerwear: Coats
(cannot be worn in classroom)
Coats may be
allowed in accordance with appropriate weather conditions.
Coats must be
open front with zipper, buttons, Velcro, or other
appropriate fasteners.
Coats may be
worn outside and in hallways during passing periods, but
must be removed inside classrooms and hung on back of
chair or in area designated by the teacher.
Trench coats
and dusters are not allowed.
Additional Guidelines
Clothing must be appropriately sized.
Caps, hats, or head coverings inside the buildings are not
allowed.
Overall pants, overall shorts, and overall jumpers are not
allowed.
Wind shorts/pants, athletic shorts/pants, sweat
shorts/pants are not allowed except as directed by
instructor during PE/athletics, cheer, band or drill team
classes.
All clothing worn inside the classroom must be solid
colored and dress code colors.
Clothing items cannot be worn in any way that reflects
gang affiliation, conceals contraband, or creates a
distraction. All clothing must be properly hemmed, clean
and free from holes or tears.
Undershirts must be one of the solid approved colors with
no lettering or designs.
Spandex, nylon, and stretch-type materials are not
allowed.
Ties, if worn to school, must be worn with dress shirt.
String ties are not allowed.
District standards for grooming and appearance for hair,
general appearance of clothing, and jewelry and other
accessories are addressed in the student handbook.
Administrators will have complete and
final judgment on all matters concerning interpretation of
the Student Dress Code. Matters concerning appearance and
dress not specifically covered in the Student Dress Code
Policy shall be within the discretion of the
administration.
